Université Bourgogne Franche-Comté (UBFC) is a community of universities and institutions (COMUE) that was created on 1st April 2015 and gathers seven higher-education and research institutions.

UBFC was created to meet an imperative need of competitivity for the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. It represents the development of higher education, research and innovation in this region by relying on the strengths and assets of the member institutions it federates. This development results in a high-quality, multidisciplinary training offer, in link with a research offer targeting recognized areas of expertise in line with the economy and culture of the region.

The UBFC strategic project is that of a federal university that respects its members’ sovereignty and aims to build collective projects.

Today UBFC hosts 60,000 students and 8,800 staff members. Its 13 sites are distributed across the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. Students are mainly located in the four large urban areas: Dijon Métropole, Grand Besançon Métropole, Pôle métropolitain Nord Franche-Comté and Sud Bourgogne.

These urban areas are also at the origin of the strong industrial culture of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and currently display great economic specificities, namely the agri-food industry, micro-techniques, energy, and mobility.

Alongside this regional economic activity, three scientific lines have been defined thanks to the key competences of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, and are recognized as themes of excellence at an international scale:

  • Advanced materials, waves, and intelligent systems
  • Territories, environment, food
  • Personalized, integrated care

Thus, the creation of UBFC boosts the competitivity of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté at different scales, i.e., the local, national, but also international scales.
